GEOGRAPHY:
South Africa has 9 provinces that are very specific in their make-up, however each has their own special appeal. The country is made up of ethnic groups and the population is approximately 50 million people.
CAPITAL:
Pretoria is the capital with major cities of Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth networked to smaller towns.
LANGUAGES:
South Africa currently has 11 official languages. English is spoken throughout the country.
CLIMATE:
As the country lies in the southern hemisphere, the seasons in South Africa are the reverse of those in the northern hemisphere. December and January are the main holiday months and in April and May, autumn brings warm days and cool nights. From the beginning of June to the end of August, cold conditions prevail in most of the country, with rain in the Western Cape. Snow sometimes falls on the Drakensberg and the Cape mountains in winter.
VISA:
South Africa has visa requirements for certain countries. It is advised to obtain multi-entry visas if traveling within the region and back into South Africa, . We have the list available of which passport holders require visas.
ELECTRICITY:
City and town power systems are generally 220/230 volts AC.
CREDIT CARDS:
Major international credit cards such as Mastercard, VISA, American Express, Diners Club and their affiliates are accepted within the region. Mastercard and VISA are the most widely used.
ROADS:
An excellent road network links the country and its neighbours. All countries within the region drive on the LEFT side of the road.
VAT: (Value Added Tax)
Currently at 14% and is included in the quoted price of most goods and services. Foreign visitors claim back VAT paid on items taken out of the country.
